History
I know I wanted to make things for the rest of my life, when I was 8 years old starting my first electronic project in science class, I connected a piece of wire to a hobby incandescent bulb and it lit up. It was magical. The oldest project I can remember was a laundry transport contraption I made at home with the innards of a Remote Control Car only a few months later. My first experience coding was writing scripts in AutoIt to prank my classmates in our school computer labs.
Now
I start with an idea, work towards a proof of concept and then, it's done.
It doesn't have to scale and it doesn't have to be pretty. It just has to work.
Working at a small hardware startup is great for this. We move quickly and iterate often. Get user input and refine what we have built. If it breaks, we learn from those lessons. It works for hardware, software and physical tools.
What's next
Working at Filimin for 3 years, I have learned to need to balance needs of building something that works now and building something that will continue to work. I've learned to leverage tools to build quickly while creating projects that can scale. I've learned to collaborate with all components of an organization from working with marketing teams to building specific tools for Customer Service agents. I've had a taste of working on projects that are simply bigger than just me.
I look forward to more of this in the future.
